Modeling & Simulation in Emergency Medicine
Modeling, Simulation, Optimization, Trauma, Physiology, Medical End-Users, Virtual Patients
Entitled to 16th century Italian mathematician, medical doctor and lawyer A. Argoli, the Argoli joint research team is a multidisciplinary group of scientists conducting applied research in the fields of trauma, shock, CBRNE, crime, metabolism (diabetes and obesity), regulation of brain blood flow, psychiatry, employing bio-mathematical modelling, simulation and statistical estimation techniques. The Argoli group operates from the Gemelli University Hospital in Rome.
A methodological approach to Crisis Management
We model the dynamics, the operating procedures and the external influences affecting the behavior of the main actors in the chain of emergency management. Simulation is an extremely cost-effective way to understand, test, challenge and optimize the response to complex crisis scenarios, and to train field operatives.

European Projects
The Argoli team has been and is present in several EU-funded projects:
- IST-ATHENA-IP
- HEARTS
- PONTIFEX
- HChLOUSO
- SICMA
- EDEN
- PULSE
- IMPRESS
providing the following functions:
- desing and software implementation of scalable, interoperable and adaptive mathematical models of trauma/CBRN victims and rescuers;
- medical expertise in protocols, doctrines and procedures for trauma and CBRN care;
- conduction of live demos of experimental devices, procedures and protocols, in connection with the Italian 118 emergency response system;
- activity as end-user and coordinator of groups of end-users in medical and first responder systems;
- design of scenarios for crisis situations, provision of metrics of performance and optimization of the response policies;
- simulation, parameter estimation and calibration of models of patients and systems.
Possible project contributions
